Honorable Mention Shenandoah Jim Doss means Daughter of the Stars or Shining Jewel in some forgotten Indian tongue. I’ve come here with my own jewel to float the river’s lazy currents in a black inner tube. Its surface sparkles like topaz and aquamarines in July sunshine. Trout circle toes, tickle us with gentle kisses. A yellow bi-plane buzzes overhead towing a banner that declares someone’s undying love. When she turns to splash boys she’s never met before, I can’t help but think: how could anything this beautiful come from me? And how will I ever have the strength to let her go? My arms are water. They pull her into me, hold her under. From bulrushes, a finch sings, flies into trees shaped like thunderheads. I hear the river whisper her name in its curves, its flow, the way it polishes stones to perfection.
